Students in grades 5 through 12 can get ahead of the cast this summer and bring their songs to life with Starlight Theatre's new Master Classes. Starlight Theatre Academy is offering three sessions of its "Acting the Song" Master Class at Starlight Theatre. Master Classes are designed to help students polish their musical theatre skills by learning from theatre professionals.
During the "Acting the Song" class, participants will learn to bring the character of a song to life. Each student will work with the master teaching artist to solidify his or her presentation while all class members observe. Students must prepare up to two songs of 32 bars each with sheet music (accompanist provided).
Andy Parkhurst and Michael Grayman will teach the first session of "Acting the Song" for incoming 5th to 8th graders will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 2. The cost is $79 for participants and $39 for parents and students who choose to audit the class but not be evaluated. The second session for incoming 9th and 10th graders will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 2. The cost is $99 for participants and $39 for parents and students who choose to audit the class but not be evaluated. Parkhurst and Grayman are co-founders of Spinning Tree Theatre in Kansas City, and directors and choreographers of several productions for Starlight Children's Theatre. As performers, they toured internationally with Mamma Mia.
Mark Madama will teach the final session¬ of "Acting the Song" is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. August 6 for incoming 11th and 12th grade students as well as recent graduates. The cost is $190 for participants and $50 for parents and students who choose to audit the class but not be evaluated. Madama is an accomplished director, writer and actor. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and the director of Footloose performing at Starlight Theatre, August 5-11.
